Xarelto (rivaroxaban) is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevents the formation of blood clots. Xarelto is used to prevent or treat a type of blood clot called deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which can lead to blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism). A DVT can occur after certain types of surgery. Xarelto is also used to prevent blood clots from forming due to a certain irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) and to lower the risk of stroke caused by a blood clot.
Recently, Xarelto has received criticism for its failure to warn consumers of its adverse side effects. The risk of adverse side effects has been experienced by too many patients. The most commonly reported injuries are deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms. Strokes and heart attacks are also experience by some patients. Other frequently reported injuries include severe hemorrhaging, gastrointestinal bleeding, and other bleeding problems. It’s been estimated that thousands of patients have been hospitalized and that hundreds of patients have died.
Many patients who suffered bleeding-related injuries, pulmonary embolisms, strokes, heart attacks and deep vein thrombosis have sued and sought damages. Most of these lawsuits are product liability lawsuits against the manufacturers Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Johnson & Johnson. Many people file lawsuits, and for different reasons, the most common reason is to recover financial compensation for a patient’s injuries. Xarelto injuries can require long and expensive hospital stays, additional and costly long-term health care costs, and substantial time away from work. Product liability lawsuits exist in mainly to shift the burden of these costs to manufacturers. For many families, filing a Xarelto lawsuit can make a big difference and can help make ends meet.
Unfortunately, far too many Xarelto patients have died. The surviving family members can often file a wrongful death lawsuit. A wrongful death lawsuit can help recover compensation for lost income, medical expenses, lost support, lost companionship, funeral costs, and other damages. A lawsuit can help surviving spouses and children who have lost a loved one avoid financial problems.
